NIU students join Goodwill to collect clothes, other items for ‘Goodwill, Not Landfill!’ drive

December 5, 2012

Goodwill logoGoodwill Industries of Northern Illinois is teaming up with NIU’s Institute for the Study of the Environment, Sustainability, and Energy to collect clothing and other gently used items during the “Goodwill, Not Landfill!” student donation drive.

The drive is scheduled from Friday, Dec. 7, through Saturday, Dec. 15. Donations will be collected from students at Stevenson Towers Residence Hall, 1321 S. Stevenson Drive or 1350 N. Stevenson Drive.

Revenue from the sale of these items will help fund Goodwill’s mission of providing jobs, training and placement services for people with barriers in the community.

Donations also reflect NIU’s commitment to helping keep the community green. Donations to Goodwill are recycled and repurposed instead of going straight to the area’s landfills.

“Goodwill is thrilled to have Northern Illinois University and its students participate in the donation drive,” said Sam Schmitz, president of Goodwill Industries. “The NIU donations will help provide individuals with the opportunity to experience the dignity to work through Goodwill’s employment programs.”
