March 1, 2011

Photo of a tornadoAt 10 a.m. today, the National Weather Service will conduct its annual statewide tornado drill.

As part of the drill:

  • Your NOAA All-Hazards radio will go off for this test. The tornado warning that is issued will clearly state that it is a test.
  • For those on NIU Weather e-mail lists, you’ll get the test tornado warning text message.
  • NIU Weather’s main website, http://weather.admin.niu.edu, will trip to a “tornado warning” screen.
  • Sirens throughout DeKalb will go off, including the one at the university near the Campus Recreation Center.

This spring and summer might yield a higher number of severe weather episodes in the Midwest, possibly containing particularly damaging tornadoes.

Members of the campus communtiy should make sure to have NOAA All-Hazards radios with SAME technology and review your tornado and severe weather safety plans at school, at work and in buildings or businesses they frequent.
