Northern Illinois wing Abdel Nader (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) was named to the Mid-American Conference All-Freshman team announced today by the league office.

Nader is leading NIU in scoring averaging 10.5 points per game, third-best among freshman in the MAC, and 4.2 rebounds per contest, tops among conference rookies.

The Skokie, Ill., native has scored in double figures in a team-high 17 games this season, including five of the last six games, and is also averaging 6.2 rebounds per game over the last 10 contests.

“This is certainly a terrific honor for Abdel,” said NIU head coach Mark Montgomery.

“Abdel has had to lead our team, as a freshman, in so many different ways. It is a great honor for him because he is always working on his game, working to get better, so to be recognized for that is a wonderful thing, the sky is truly the limit for Abdel.”

In addition to scoring and rebounding, Nader is also the MAC leader in blocked shots among conference rookies while ranking fifth in steals and seventh in assists by MAC freshmen.

Nader is the first Huskie to earn All-Freshman Team honors since 2009 when Mike DiNunno earned All-Freshman honors.
