New webpage addresses collective bargaining questions

September 16, 2016

Recently, the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board (IELRB) certified the United Faculty Alliance (UFA) of NIU, UPI, IFT-AFT, AAUP (UFA) as the union representing tenured and tenure-track faculty at NIU. Representation by a union means that the union negotiates the salaries, hours and terms and conditions of employment collectively on behalf of each member included in the bargaining unit, and the university is precluded from negotiating such matters with individual bargaining unit members.

While NIU has several already-established unions on campus – including the recently formed AFSCME unit representing select civil service employees – and the University Professionals of Illinois (UPI) representing the instructors, Human Resource Services (HRS) and senior administrative officials have received many questions, specifically regarding UFA.

To better assist you with both academic and non-academic union related questions, please visit the Employee and Labor Relations website. A list of frequently asked questions has been developed to provide you with quick access to basic questions and/or with an opportunity to forward specific questions to HRS for review.

If you have additional questions, please contact Karen Baker at klbaker@niu.edu
