Sign up as a Team NIU volunteer and help with Huskie Move-In

July 26, 2021

With Move-In just three weeks away, Housing and Residential Services is seeking students and employees from across Northern Illinois University to help out new Huskies.

Volunteers can sign up for shifts as individuals or collectively as Student Organizations seeking to gain service hours. Help is needed Aug. 18, 19 and 20, and each shift is a half-day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. or noon to 5 p.m. Volunteers can opt to work full days and shifts on more than one day.

“This is an opportunity for anybody — returning students, faculty, staff and student orgs — to welcome Huskies as they come to campus,” said Tim Trottier, Assistant Director for Summer Operations, Services, and Promotions for Housing and Residential Services in the Division of Student Affairs. “Move-In day is different for every student. The emotions Huskies and their families are going through run the gamut. That means our volunteers are invaluable in making the day more manageable.”

Team NIU volunteers will be assigned to various residential areas on campus and can choose tasks ranging from greeting Huskies to signing out carts, offering moving assistance, providing directions and checking in students arriving at the curbside.

Trottier says many as 3,500 residents will have hourly appointments to head for the halls over three days, making Move-In a great opportunity for employees and students to reconnect with the NIU community.

“If you’ve been off campus for a while, this is a really nice way to come back, start interacting with Huskies, and kick off the year,” he said. “Any help we can get is appreciated and a benefit to all of our students.”
