Spring course registration begins Nov. 7

November 3, 2022

As spring 2023 course registration approaches, faculty and staff throughout the university are encouraged to help students prepare for the upcoming semester.

“Class registration is an early indicator of whether we are meeting the goals of our Strategic Enrollment Management Plan.” said Nichole Knutson, Associate Vice Provost for Student Success. “All NIU faculty and staff can contribute to the plan’s success by helping students navigate the class registration process and ensure students are aware of important registration dates and action items.”

Spring course registration begins on Monday, Nov. 7, 2022, when student athletes, veterans and University Honors students will be able to register for their next set of classes. Course registration opens in tiers based upon an individual’s status as a graduate, student at large or undergraduate student in conjunction with the number of credit hours they have earned. Students can find the date they are eligible to register for classes by logging in to MyNIU to view their enrollment date.

For the past several weeks, academic advisors have been connecting with students using Navigate and the Division of Enrollment Management, Marketing and Communications has been sending important registration information to students using email, social media and the NIU Mobile app. Students have been encouraged to meet with their academic advisor for help selecting courses that will keep them on track to graduation and for assistance resolving any holds on their student accounts that may hinder them from registering for classes on time.

One significant update to the registration process taking place this year is the introduction of Navigate Student as a platform for registering for classes.  Students will be able to use Navigate Student to register for classes when registration functionality is launched on Nov. 14. Students who are eligible to register between Nov. 7 through 13 are being encouraged to continue using MyNIU so they can enroll on their assigned date and time.

Students not yet registered when open enrollment begins are welcome to use Navigate Student to plan and register for courses.

It is important to note that registration through Navigate Student is new functionality for NIU and has been tested extensively in preparation for launch.

As with any new system, we need to be prepared; therefore, MyNIU will continue to be operational for students to register should NIU experience for any unexpected system difficulties.

“As we approach Nov. 7, I would like to encourage faculty and staff to engage with students and ask them how their course planning is going,” said Knutson. “If students are experiencing problems, point them to resources that are available to help.”

The Registration and Records website is a great resource and provides students with the information they need to successfully register for spring courses. If students have questions about holds on their accounts, a specially designed webpage explains why the hold was placed and the action to take to have the hold removed. The Student Life website also provides students with resources, tips and events to support their success.
