Engineering Technology program helps expedite credential

February 14, 2023

Engineering Technology students in the Industrial Management Technology, Environmental Health and Safety program are now able to waive the initial exam and apply directly for the Graduate Safety Practitioner designation upon graduation.

After review and audit, the Board of Certified Safety Professionals has approved NIU’s B.S. in Engineering Technology-Industrial Management & Technology, Environmental Health & Safety (ET-IMT-EHS) program as a Qualified Academic Program (QAP).

With the Qualified Academic Program recognition, NIU students graduating from the ET-IMT program will meet the credential requirement in the pathway toward the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) which is considered the “gold standard” in safety certification. NIU’s ET-IMT, Environmental Health & Safety program is now one of only 118 Qualified Academic Programs at 80 institutions in the world to receive this recognition.

With the Quality Academic Program recognition, NIU EHS program graduates are able to waive the Associate Safety Professional (ASP) exam (a first level certification) and apply directly for the Graduate Safety Practitioner designation within one year of graduation.

The QAP Coordinator for NIU program Dr. William Mills, associate professor in the Engineering Technology Department commented this designation “can be a real differentiator for new graduates entering industry for the first time or those seeking a position internationally.”

Two years in the making, the engineering technology program received notice in October, 2022 of their status approval and upgrade providing the ET-IMT Environmental Health & Safety program with programmatic, regional and international recognition as a Quality Academic Program.

Dr Mills “would like to thank engineering faculty and curriculum committee for their ideas and input into the course, areas of study and programmatic changes necessary to make this recognition possible”.
