Andy Pemberton named 2024 Board of Trustees (BOT) Staff Award recipient

April 17, 2024

As assistant director of internal communications and NIU Clearinghouse, Andy Pemberton works behind the scenes to make sure that NIU’s people and programs are in the spotlight. If you read NIU Today, a Huskie Spotlight, or an NIU announcement, there’s a good chance you’ve seen his work. And while there isn’t a byline on the many communications he crafts and curates, his talents and Huskie Pride are shared with students, faculty, staff and the community on a daily basis.

Colleagues call him a trusted resource and go-to member of the enrollment management, marketing and communications (EMMC) team. He works tirelessly to promote faculty and staff accomplishments as well as students’ research and artistry across all areas of the university.

“The relationships Andy has forged with partners across campus speak to his level of professionalism and integrity,” said Allison Maurer, associate director of NIU social media who nominated Pemberton for this award.  “In addition to working on centrally managed communications, Andy also collaborates with critical units on campus to help facilitate and improve their communications and they rely on his expertise and guidance.”

A Huskie alum with over 13 years of service at NIU, Pemberton’s breadth of experience and institutional knowledge make him a deserving candidate for the BOT Staff Award. The annual award recognizes up to two staff members who excel in their job performance and contributions to NIU and higher education, as well as their commitment to NIU’s mission, vision and values.

“I think being an alum of the university has been incredibly beneficial in my role,” Pemberton said. “I think about the things I wish I knew as a student and try to make sure that I am providing current students with the information I missed out on when I was in school.”

Jennice O’Brien, assistant vice president of university marketing and internal communications, said Pemberton exemplifies excellence in his role as assistant director.

“Andy has a remarkable ability to juggle numerous communications and projects concurrently, while still approaching them all with creativity,” O’Brien said. “His talents as both a designer and a writer ensure that our internal communications resonate with clarity and impact.”

O’Brien said his counsel is widely trusted and sought after, and he regularly lends his expertise, whether it be through service on university committees or in departmental brainstorming sessions.

“Andy’s collaborative spirit, positive attitude, steadfast dedication and NIU-first approach make him truly deserving of this prestigious honor,” O’Brien said.

In addition to his responsibilities and contributions to campus communications, Pemberton has taken on additional roles of service over the past decade. He served as chair for the Presidential Commission on Interfaith Initiatives, where he championed and encouraged inclusivity. He has volunteered as co-chair of the NIU Homecoming Communications Committee for the past five years, leading a team of NIU students, faculty and staff to increase awareness and attendance of the week-long event.

“Andy demonstrates excellence in all that he does by being responsive, helpful, taking time to explain and provide feedback about any of the relevant assignments he is involved with,” said Liz Wright, executive assistant, Office of the President. “I rely on him heavily, as does much of the campus community for support. He continues to work on process improvement in a variety of ways, demonstrating shared leadership not only in stepping up to give ideas but also in volunteering to advance those ideas.”

Wright said that Pemberton understands that students are the priority at NIU and continues to make students a priority in his day-to-day efforts.

For Pemberton, he’s grateful to be a Huskie and to work at a place where he is continuously learning.

“I enjoy many things about working at NIU,” Pemberton said. “There isn’t a day that goes by where I am not learning something new. There are so many wonderful programs, events, initiatives and projects that are happening here, and I like that I can help share them with our campus community.”

Pemberton will receive a $5,000 stipend and be recognized at the annual staff awards celebration on April 25.
